Design with nature

Design with nature
Ian L McHarg’s Design with Nature was published in 1969 at a time of heightened environmental consciousness. It encouraged landscape architects and planners to design with the living land, respecting complex systems of wildlife, vegetation and waterways.

Instead of the dominate and destroy mantra that underscored design thinking in the era of industrialisation, McHarg pushed designers to turn to nature for functional and aesthetic elements, to re-empower nature as designer in a hybrid human-natural world.
